12 years 10 months. That is how long ago I left corporate America, to stay home with my children.
We always knew when we had a second child, I would open a home daycare, and stay home with our children. However when our first son was just 6 months old, our then daycare provider closed up shop to go back to work. Long story short, after a long search and not finding anyone else we were comfortable with, I left my job to stay home.
Fast forward almost 13 years, now 4 kids of my own, and countless daycare kids later. I have become a poster child for the frumpy Stay At Home Mom. I live in yoga pants, leggings, and Capri versions of both in the summer. All black of each of these of course. I throw on whatever too big T-shirt, or sometimes yoga tank when I’m trying to dress it up. Ugh. Gross.
This all started because I had my “daycare uniform” as I called it. I was sick of having babies spit up, paint, glue, food, whatever.. ruining my “real” clothes. Enter yoga pants. But as the years crept by, I can’t even make that excuse anymore. I no longer care for “little” kids, and only have older kids before and after school. So, why can’t I get out of the clothing rut? I’m ashamed to admit, I wear these same sloppy, “comfy” clothing everyday. No matter how many places I have to be. I tell myself that I am not buying new clothes for myself until I lose weight. Well, then I just continue to feel awful in my current wardrobe.
I know my self-esteem and body issues have taken over. I need to lose about 25 pounds. I am getting grey hair. My skin looks dull and blah. These are the things I see in the mirror, so I don’t even bother trying anymore.
I turned 40 this past year. In fact, I’ll be 41 in September. I dress frumpy every day and it is not helping my self-esteem issues. I am tired. Exhausted really, these past few weeks, and you know what? I look every bit of it.
This photo was taken this morning. I didn’t sleep well last night, so I snoozed way past when I should have. I rolled out of bed literally 20 minutes before my first kids would arrive, and this is what I threw on. I didn’t put much make-up on, and my hair when in a pony tail where it typically lives. The person in this picture does not make self-care a priority, and it shows. Honestly, I debated sharing the picture. I look tired, overweight by way more than I actually am, and unhappy. No wonder I feel like poo most of the time.
Thankfully, I share all of this with you, because I have a plan to get out of my yoga pants rut!
Have you heard of “Get Your Pretty on”? This was started by another momma, working at home, who also fell a little too in love with her yoga pants. You guys, I LOVE this idea. There are several challenges that you can join. You pay a small fee, and get 3 weeks worth of outfits to wear. There are daily assignments, so there is no more guessing what looks good together. The best part is that unlike some of the other subscription services, you pay one time, and get to use YOUR clothes!
This challenge will get you out of Yoga pants TODAY.
You can shop your own closet first to see what you have that might work. If there are pieces you need, you can go to the stores YOU like, and buy pieces that fit great. Personally I headed right to the thrift store as that is always my first stop when I need something. You’ll be surprised though, how many of these items you already own and just never bother to wear.
I am working on the SAHM Casual Basics Challenge. These super easy to find, casual pieces are probably in your closet. Most were in mine. The couple of things that I did buy cost me less than $15 at my local thrift store. I am excited to see what outfits look best on me, so that I will have some great choices this fall when the weather is cooler. In fact, starting Monday, I am going to post my outfit each day to show you what a great outfit can do to make you look and more importantly FEEL better than the frumpy mess above. Who knows, I might even start doing my hair!
If you are looking for a challenge for these last weeks of summer, the Summer GYPO Style Challenge is for you! Super cute, easy to put together warm weather outfits, and again, likely already in your closet! In fact, I just may do both because I love the idea of these challenges so much!
Don’t get me wrong, eating clean, working out consistently, and getting more sleep are all on my agenda to get my self-care plan going, eating clean, and work towards a healthier, happier me. But these challenges from Get Your Pretty On, are going to make such a difference right along with them! The video below explains in a little more detail how the challenges work.
I’d love for you to join me Monday with whatever challenge you think would be best for your own needs! Let’s get out of those yoga pants, and into REAL clothes. I’ll be sharing my outfits over on Instagram and Facebook, and hope you’ll comment with yours! We can do this Mommas!
